About

Allow us to introduce ourselves. We are BFI Uncut, a grassroots collective composed of BFI staff and members of the public. We are a completely independent watchdog of the BFI:

- sorting publicly accessible information about the BFI structure and its management
- providing up to date media aggregation relating to the BFI
- offering a critical forum

We oppose:
- staff cuts, growing wage inequality
- the loss of the BFI’s core mission and role
- the increase in corporatism and lack of transparency

We believe strongly in the mission of the British Film Institute and feel angered and saddened by the coalition governments decision to reduce the grant in aid by 15% and the management's blanket acceptance of this.

We live in a very exciting age. Technology and communication has changed the world forever. The funny thing is not everyone has realised the extent of this change. Allow us to illustrate: Traditionally the heart of our campaign might have been a facebook group or this blog alone (we of course have both), Twitter is also a very powerful tool. However, as powerful as these tools are they pale in comparison to a wiki and fortunately, we have a wiki! We strongly recommend that everyone watch this 3 minute video and witnesses the power of the wiki:

Oh and lest we forget - our wiki: www.wikiuncut.com

Which leads us to our not so secret weapon…the Truth.

The most powerful tool of all is going to knock your socks off. If you've watched the above video you will understand how easy it is to build a wiki from nothing into an enormous resource and that is precisely our goal at BFI Uncut. We intend to compile every single proposed cut by the executive and then list beside it every single reason why those cuts are a bad idea. This is in no way a purely obstructive move but it will point out to the executive all the things that they have not accounted for and highlight some serious flaws in their plans.

An organisation as complex as the BFI can not be understood by 10 people and if it can't be understood by 10 people then it should not be chopped and changed by 10 people. Unfortunately this is the power the executive has and they don't need to understand the organisation to chop and change it. A complex problem requires a complex solution. We believe we have found that solution. We won't need any tricky language or sneaky lies to build this wiki. All we need is the Truth! Please help us contribute to the largest cuts encyclopaedia the world has ever seen.

Of course technology can only take us so far. There is no marketing substitute for word of mouth. So please tell everyone you know about the cuts and if you can, come up with your own creative ways to get around these obstacles. The heart of this movement must be a healthy balance between collectivism and decentralisation.

In Solidarity,
BFI Uncut
